Ants
Small but relentless, ants can turn your home into their personal buffet the moment they slip inside. They stream through your pantry, hide under kitchen appliances, and squeeze behind window frames, creating a problem that can feel endless, whether it’s a seasonal surge or a year-round battle. Even though their colonies are outdoors, it’s completely normal for them to raid your home for food and haul it back to their nests. And let’s be honest, no one wants uninvited guests sneaking in for midnight snacks.
For a long-lasting fix that sends ants packing, call the experts at Diamond Pest Solution and reclaim your home for good.
Why Are Ants Invading My Home?
No matter the species, ants usually invade your home for two main reasons: food or a cozy place to nest. Even the smallest crumbs, a few stray kibbles of pet food, or a sticky spot on the counter can lure them in and quickly turn into a full-blown infestation. Once you remove their food source, these tiny invaders typically move on in search of a more favorable place to survive and thrive.
Weather can drive them inside, too. Heavy rain, flooding, or extreme drought can make their outdoor homes uncomfortable, pushing ants to seek shelter and resources indoors.
Ant Species
Odorous Ants
Odorous house ants get their name from the strong, rotten citrus-like smell they release when crushed. They’re also one of the most common ant species in the world. These ants are monomorphic, meaning every worker is the same size, and they typically build their colonies in dark, damp areas around the exterior of a home. However, they can easily relocate indoors, settling into wall voids or beneath flooring. Most operate from a main colony with smaller satellite colonies positioned near reliable food sources.
Because they can detect and avoid repellent products, odorous house ants often “bud,” breaking off into multiple colonies. This ability makes them spread quickly and significantly harder to control.
Pavement Ants
Pavement ants typically nest around hard, paved surfaces such as driveways, sidewalks, and building foundations. They’re recognizable by their small size, dark brown color, and noticeably large heads. One of the easiest ways to spot them is by the tiny mounds of displaced soil they leave behind when tunneling to the surface. They’re also known for forming dramatic “boiling” swarms large gatherings that occur when neighboring colonies collide and battle over territory and resources.
A single pavement ant colony can contain up to 4,000 ants and multiple queens. While they prefer outdoor pavement, they can migrate indoors, settling into insulation, under flooring, and through tight structural spaces. Thanks to their ability to navigate cracks, masonry joints, and seams, these ants are highly skilled at slipping into homes and spreading quickly.
Carpenter Ants
Carpenter ants are most often found around rotten or moisture-damaged wood, where the softened material makes tunneling easier. Typically black though sometimes maroon, these ants vary in size depending on their caste, or role within the colony. Despite what their name suggests, carpenter ants don’t eat wood. Instead, they excavate it, carving out smooth, honeycomb-like tunnels called galleries. This is why they gravitate toward decayed wood: it’s far easier to mine than healthy lumber.
A key sign of carpenter ant activity is the fine wood shavings, known as frass, that they push out of their tunnels. During spring and summer, especially after rain, carpenter ant colonies release winged reproductive ants called “swarmers.” These winged ants can disperse widely as they search for new nesting sites.
