Earwigs
Despite their creepy name, courtesy of an old myth about them crawling into people’s ears (no thanks!), earwigs are actually harmless to humans. Those scary-looking pinchers? All intimidation, zero real danger. But with more than 2,000 species across nearly every continent, they definitely know how to make themselves at home.
While they won’t hurt you, they can snack on your garden and houseplants, and some species even release a foul-smelling (but non-toxic) liquid when disturbed. Not exactly the scent you want floating around your living room.
If earwigs are invading your space, Diamond Pest Solutions is ready to shine. Our pros know exactly how to kick these plant-chewing, odor-spraying pests to the curb. Reach out for a free estimate and let Diamond give your home the pest-free sparkle it deserves.
How To Identify Earwigs
Earwigs are easy to spot thanks to the distinctive pinchers at the end of their abdomen, their signature (and slightly spooky) feature. They do have small wings, but don’t expect to see them taking flight very often. Most earwigs range from light brown to reddish brown to nearly black, and typically measure between ¼ inch and 1 inch long. Like all insects, they sport six legs and a pair of antennae. Since they’re nocturnal, they spend daylight hours tucked away in tight crevices.
Outdoors, earwigs love hanging around leaf piles, mulch, wood stacks, and other spots full of plant material and insects, aka their favorite snacks. Inside the home, they gravitate toward areas with moisture or debris, like basements, bathrooms, or entry points with dirt buildup. They won’t knock on the front door, but they’re experts at slipping through tiny cracks in your foundation or exterior. Once inside, they’ll head straight for dark, damp hiding places and easy food sources.
