Cockroaches
Spotting a cockroach in your home is enough to make anyone’s skin crawl. Roaches are notoriously tough to eliminate, and many homeowners assume an infestation means their home is dirty. In reality, even the cleanest homes can attract cockroaches. They’re resourceful hitchhikers that sneak in through tiny cracks, packages, drains, and more.
Cockroaches are small, brown insects known for invading homes, kitchens, restaurants, and hotels. They’re constantly searching for food and moisture, which is why they often show up in places where meals are prepared or stored.
If you see even a single roach, it may be the first clue of a bigger issue. Don’t wait for the problem to grow. Reach out to the pest experts at Diamond Pest Solutions and schedule your free inspection today.
How To Indentify Cockroaches
Cockroaches are easily recognized by their six legs and long, flexible antennae. Most species have wings, though many aren’t capable of flying. Their appearance varies by type, typically shades of brown, and they can range from about half an inch to nearly two inches in length.
Another clear sign of a cockroach problem is the presence of egg casings. Female cockroaches produce clusters of eggs protected inside a hard, capsule-like case called an ootheca. Some species carry the ootheca until the eggs are ready to hatch, while others stash them in dark, hidden areas around your home. Once developed, these eggs hatch into dozens of baby cockroaches, rapidly expanding the infestation.
Oothecae are usually brown, less than a centimeter long, and can be mistaken for droppings or tiny, legless insects. If you spot these egg cases anywhere in your home, it’s a strong indicator of roach activity and the perfect time to call in a professional.

Cockroach Types
German Cockroach
The German cockroach is one of the most common and most frustrating household roaches to deal with. Small, fast, and incredibly good at hiding, these light-brown pests are typically identified by two dark parallel stripes running down their backs. Adults grow to about ½ inch long, but don’t let their size fool you they reproduce at an alarming rate.
American Cockroach
The American cockroach is one of the largest roach species found in homes easily reaching up to 2 inches in length. Reddish-brown with a distinctive yellowish figure-eight pattern behind the head, these fast-moving insects are often called “palmetto bugs” in the South.
Despite their name, they’re not picky about where they settle. American cockroaches thrive in warm, damp environments like basements, crawl spaces, sewers, utility rooms, and commercial kitchens. They’re strong fliers, quick runners, and can slip through surprisingly small gaps.
Oriental Cockroach
The Oriental cockroach often called the “water bug” is a dark, glossy roach species known for thriving in cool, damp environments. Typically jet-black or very dark brown, adults grow to about 1–1¼ inches long and move more slowly than other roach types. Unlike German or American cockroaches, Oriental roaches have a distinct, smooth appearance and a strong preference for moisture
Cockroach Prevention Tips
Once you begin spotting cockroaches in your home, it’s crucial to act fast before the problem spreads. One of the most effective first steps is removing anything that attracts them. Roaches rely on food and moisture to survive, so a thorough deep cleaning of the affected areas can make a big difference. There are also several at-home methods that may help reduce roach activity, including:
- Boric acid
- Cockroach spray
- Cockroach traps
However, the most reliable way to eliminate and prevent roaches is by bringing in a professional pest control service. A trained technician can identify the source of the infestation, target the areas where roaches are breeding and hiding, and implement the treatments needed to remove them and keep them from returning.
